How to run a free gift with purchase on Shopify
Gift with purchase is one of the oldest offers in retail because it changes the question in the shopper’s head from “is this worth it” to “what do I get”. On Shopify there are three ways to run one, and the differences show up at the cart, not in the marketing.
Option 1: native buy X get Y discounts
Shopify’s built-in discounts include buy X get Y, which can discount the Y item to free automatically or via a code. It is free and native, with one behavioral catch: the shopper has to add the gift to the cart themselves. Many never realize they qualify, and a gift nobody claims does no marketing. It also lives entirely at cart level, so there is no moment on the product page where the shopper sees the gift getting closer.
Option 2: manual workarounds
Zero-price gift products, staff adding gifts to draft orders, “free gift” variants. These all technically work and all corrupt something: reporting counts $0 products as sales, inventory needs babysitting, and nothing stops a shopper from ordering five zero-price gifts. Fine for a weekend promotion, painful as a permanent offer.
Option 3: an app that auto-adds the gift
The behavior shoppers actually respond to: when the cart qualifies, the gift appears in the cart by itself, visibly free. No code, no hunting for the gift product.
With BigBox, the gift is a reward tier inside a bundle offer. You pick the gift product and the quantity threshold; when a shopper’s box reaches it, the gift is added automatically and discounted to free at checkout through a Shopify Functions automatic discount. Because the offer lives on the product page with a progress bar, shoppers see the gift coming before they qualify, which is precisely what makes gift tiers pull bigger boxes.
The pitfalls that ruin gift offers
Whatever mechanism you pick, check these four things:
- Does the gift count toward the threshold? If a free gift itself counts as an item, shoppers can ladder into rewards you never intended. In BigBox, gift items never count toward tier progress.
- Is the gift a real order line? Fulfillment needs to see the gift to ship it, and inventory needs to decrement. A gift that is a real cart line discounted to free behaves correctly everywhere. A gift bolted on outside the order does not.
- What if the gift has variants? “One size fits all” gifts disappoint half your shoppers. BigBox lets the shopper pick the variant before the box goes in the cart.
- What happens when the connected discount breaks? A gift that suddenly charges full price at checkout is worse than no gift. Ask how the setup detects and repairs broken discounts - here is how BigBox handles it.
Picking the threshold
Set the gift where it stretches the order, not where orders already land. If most carts hold three items, a gift at four moves behavior; a gift at three gives margin away for orders you were getting anyway. Start one step above your typical box, watch the funnel, and adjust - BigBox’s per-bundle analytics show whether the tier actually moves box size.
