How to offer build-a-box on Shopify, three ways

A build-a-box offer lets shoppers assemble their own selection instead of buying a fixed kit. It works because choice converts: the shopper commits to the box because it is exactly the box they wanted. On Shopify you have three realistic ways to run one, and they are not interchangeable.

Option 1: manual bundle products

The zero-app approach: create a new product for each combination you want to sell, price it, and photograph it. A “coffee trio” product, a “starter kit” product, and so on.

Where it works. A handful of fixed combinations that rarely change. No app spend, nothing new to learn.

Where it breaks. Inventory. The bundle product has its own stock number that knows nothing about the components, so you either oversell components or constantly reconcile by hand. Every price change means editing every bundle that contains the product. And it is not build-a-box at all - the shopper gets no choice.

Option 2: Shopify’s free Bundles app

Shopify Bundles is Shopify’s own free app for fixed bundles and multipacks. It creates a bundle product linked to its components, and orders list the component SKUs individually, which fixes most of the manual approach’s inventory pain.

Where it works. Fixed combinations at a fixed price. It is free, native, and solid at that job. If that is all you need, use it and pay nobody.

Where it breaks. It is fixed by design: no shopper choice, no progress toward rewards, no tiered discounts, free gifts, or free-shipping incentives. Per Shopify’s documentation the bundle price also does not update automatically when component prices change, and bundles are not compatible with subscriptions or pre-orders. Option 3: a bundle-builder app

A bundle-builder app puts an interactive builder in front of the shopper: pick from a curated set, watch rewards unlock, add the whole box to the cart. This is the only option of the three that is actually build-a-box.

The implementation details matter more than the demo video:

  • What lands in the cart. Some apps add the bundle as a single combined line item that splits later; some create hidden bundle products. BigBox adds each picked item as a real Shopify cart line with attribution properties, so inventory, fulfillment, and reporting behave exactly as they always have.
  • How discounts apply. The native path is Shopify Functions with automatic app discounts, applied at checkout when the cart qualifies. Anything code-based or draft-order-based adds friction or fragility.
  • What happens when a discount breaks. Merchants edit discounts. A good builder notices a missing or expired connected discount and repairs it instead of silently charging full price.
  • Pricing model. Several popular bundle apps price by how much revenue your bundles generate per month, so success raises your bill. Flat pricing is worth checking for.

Choosing between them

  • Fixed combos, no shopper choice, zero budget: Shopify Bundles.
  • One or two combos that never change and you enjoy spreadsheets: manual products, cautiously.
  • Shopper-built boxes with tier rewards: a bundle-builder app. That is the job BigBox was built for - up to five reward tiers, real cart lines, and no theme-code edits, from $14.99 per month flat.
